A Partnership for Greener Transport

3 min read

On 17 May 2024, the Automobile Association of Singapore Academy (AAS Academy) and Green Freight Asia Network Ltd (GFA) renewed their partnership. The two organisations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on their shared goals of improving road safety, fuel efficiency and sustainability in road transportation.

AAS Academy offers two specialised eco-driving modules designed to enhance skills and techniques aimed at improving driving efficiency and sustainability. For Train the Driver module, participants get to learn on how to harness the use of modern vehicle technologies and effective eco-driving techniques to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve fuel consumption, and reduce crash risk. This will improve the overall performance, safety, and comfort of the vehicles. AAS Academy also offers a module for Train the Trainer to equip fleet managers with the skills to hold training sessions for their drivers. Training can be conducted in-person or virtually, and in English and Mandarin Chinese.

GFA is a non-profit association of industry players in the Asia-Pacific region. It aims to promote fuel and energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower operational costs across supply chains. As a first step on the journey to greener freight, GFA encourages its members to adopt eco-driving as a low-cost practice that reduces fuel costs and emissions.

A HISTORY OF COLLABORATION
AAS Academy and GFA have a long history of cooperation. In 2018, GFA organised an eco-driving training workshop in Singapore with training provided by AAS Academy. Around 20 fleet managers and drivers from 9 companies, which were part of GFA’s membership network, attended the event. Through the workshop, participants learnt about the benefits of eco-driving, and ways to enhance fuel efficiency through vehicle choice and regular maintenance. They were also trained on key skills like calculating fuel savings and limiting speed.

2018 ECO-DRIVING WORKSHOP IN SINGAPORE

The collaboration continued in 2019, when GFA organised a second eco-driving workshop in Singapore with AAS Academy as the training partner. The 3-hour session was attended by 20 participants from 7 GFA member companies, and they learnt about topics related to eco-driving and fuel efficiency. At the end of the training session, participants received certificates to commemorate their achievements.

PARTICIPANTS OF THE 2019 ECO-DRIVING WORKSHOP

In 2023, GFA invited AAS Academy to conduct an eco-driving workshop as part of Green Freight Movement, an event series organised by GFA with support from the UPS Foundation to promote capacity building on sustainability. The series was aimed at participants in the Asia-Pacific region, especially those involved in the freight, transport and logistics industries.

Based on GFA’s mission to increase access to knowledge on green logistics practices in the region, the workshop was free and open to all participants. The workshop was also conducted online to ensure that attendees from all countries in the Asia-Pacific region could participate, attracting participants from countries such as Bhutan, China and Vietnam. In total, 50 participants from various companies across the region took part in the workshop. After the event, post-workshop materials in English and regional languages like Bahasa Indonesia, Simplified Chinese and Vietnamese were distributed to participants.

ABOUT THE PARTNERSHIP
Under the MoU, AAS Academy and GFA will continue their cooperation to promote greener and safer driving practices across the Asia-Pacific region. AAS Academy will provide eco-driving modules conducted by certified trainers. GFA will encourage its members to take up eco-driving through the Eco-driving Programme, with AAS Academy as an official training partner.

GFA also promotes eco-driving through the GFA Labelling and Certification Programme, where members can achieve higher certification levels by providing eco-driving training for their drivers.
