A Clean Windscreen. Why It Matters

5 min read
A clean windscreen and reliable wipers can make all the difference when the weather turns. Here’s why clear visibility matters — and how Si-Plus Silicone Wipers can help keep your view of the road safer in the rain.

Picture this: You are on your way to AA Centre to apply for your IDP on a Saturday morning. The GPS shows normal traffic with minimal road works, and the radio weather report mentions just a hint of rain as you drive out of the carpark. You are all set for a relaxed drive to start the weekend.

As you started driving on Commonwealth Avenue, a light shower starts hitting your windscreen before turning into a heavy downpour within seconds. Even with your wipers in action, all you can see is a distorted view of the road ahead and the blurry brake lights of the vehicles in front. You decide to filter to the left lanes and slow down for a safer drive.Sound familiar?

WHY A CLEAN WINDSCREEN MATTERS

The reasons for a distorted view can vary, from a dirty windscreen to worn wipers that no longer work as they should. While these may seem like minor issues, they can affect how clearly you see the road, especially when driving conditions change suddenly.

A dirty windscreen can scatter light and create glare, making it harder to see lane markings, road signs and vehicles ahead. During the day, sunlight can reflect off streaks, dust and water marks. At night, headlights from oncoming vehicles may appear brighter or more distracting, especially if there is a film of grime on the glass.

Rain can make the problem worse. Dirt, oil residue and worn wipers can cause water to smear across the windscreen instead of clearing away cleanly. This can leave drivers with a blurred view of brake lights, traffic signals and hazards on the road.

Keeping your windscreen clean is therefore not just about appearance. It is a simple but important part of safer driving, helping you maintain better visibility in rain, bright sunlight and night-time conditions.

CLEAN YOUR WINDSCREEN

There are many ways to clean your windscreen, but the classic method remains one of the most effective: water, a suitable automotive glass cleaner and clean microfibre cloths. In fact, it is best to have more than one cloth on hand — one for initial cleaning and another for drying or buffing.

  • Prepare the windscreen. Rinse the exterior surface with water to remove visible dirt, dust and loose particles. If the windscreen is very dirty, give it a more thorough wash first before drying it with a clean microfibre cloth.
  • Apply a glass cleaner. Use an automotive glass cleaner and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Wipe the glass in smooth, even strokes with a separate clean microfibre cloth. Avoid using dirty cloths or unsuitable cleaners, as they may leave streaks, cause smudging or affect visibility.
  • Clean the inside too. The interior surface of your windscreen can also collect dust, fingerprints and film over time. Cleaning both sides helps reduce glare from sunlight during the day and headlights at night.

Always use clean and lint-free materials. Leftover dirt particles or debris on a dirty cloth can cause smudges that may impair visibility or worse, scratch and damage your windscreen. A clear windscreen is essential for safe driving, especially during rain or when sunlight and headlights create glare.

Cleaning your windscreen may also reveal glass damage like chips and cracks that were previously hidden by dirt. If you notice any damage, arrange for windscreen repair or replacement as soon as possible.

FOR OUR MEMBERS, WE PRESENT TO YOU: SI-PLUS SILICONE WIPERS

Made with Mita Rubber Silicone Technology from Japan, Si-Plus Silicone Wipers coat your windscreen with every wipe. Its built-in hydrophobic coating helps prevent rainwater from sticking to the applied surface. With prolonged use, water beads up and rolls off more easily, helping to improve visibility during wet weather.

Unlike standard rubber blades that only clear water from the windscreen, Si-Plus Silicone Wipers are designed as both a wiper and a coating system. As the silicone wiper blades move across the glass, they help build up a water-repellent coating over time. This allows rainwater to bead up into droplets and roll away more easily, improving visibility during wet weather. With regular use, the beading effect becomes more noticeable, helping drivers maintain a clearer view of the road when it rains.

To achieve the water-beading effect, proper installation and activation are important. The windscreen should first be thoroughly cleaned and dried to remove dirt, residue and surface contaminants. Once the wiper blades are fitted securely, the wipers should be run on a clean, dry windscreen for about 3 to 5 minutes. This initial dry-wiping process helps activate the coating and allows the water-repellent layer to develop with continued use.
