Moving the clan around town gets more luxurious and environmentally sustainable with these three new EV MPVs.
Increasingly, we are seeing larger people movers on the road in Singapore. The comfort, space – and in no small part, luxury – of these huge vehicles have attracted the type of drivers who want their passengers to enjoy every aspect of being driven around in Business Class. Today, with the introduction of several impressive EV models, this can be done with the added benefit of electrified mobility.
BYD M6
No matter where you drive, you’ll likely see a BYD EV in Singapore these days. The brand has blanketed local roads with their popular, and well-designed SUVs. The Chinese company extends its product line with the BYD M6 EV MPV. On paper, it looks highly attractive, ticking the boxes in what most drivers in this genre look for.
From its exterior, this is a handsome looking MPV. The silhouette from the side reminds you of the ever-popular Toyota Wish, albeit slightly longer and with more heft. Despite being over 4m in length and 1810mm wide, there is a streamlined aerodynamic sense of the lines. The panoramic glass roof may not be immediately obvious from the outside looking in, but passengers would enjoy the open feel sitting in the car. The roof is rack-ready if you’re considering installing after-market ones to hall luggage or bicycles.
With the seats up, the seven-seater MPV has a smaller storage space of 180l of storage space at the back, which expands to 580l with the third row folded. Boot space isn’t what most drivers of MPVs look for anyway, but flexibility in seat arrangements will always be welcomed. The 6/4 split fold middle and rear seats lend themselves to some flexibility in space configuration, while the six-way front, and four-way passenger electrical seat adjustment is music to the ears to families with several drivers.
Being a Chinese EV, you can expect a nice variety of in-car infotainment. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is available, and Bluetooth phone connectivity lets you stay in touch while keeping you safe on the roads. And even if you don’t want to hook your phone up, satellite navigation lets you find where you want to go. All this is available via the 12.8-inch intelligent, rotating infotainment display that also offers voice assistant. Both Type A and Type C ports are offered to keep all your devices juiced up.
The BYD Blade Battery in the M6 has a 71.8kWh capacity, with a range of 440km. A full charge takes an hour and ten minutes by DC, and 13 hours on AC. The front-wheel-drive MPV has a top speed of 180km/h. The blade design is generally known to be safer and more durable compared to lithium nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries and are reputed for their high-volume energy storage, higher volumetric efficiency and better thermal management.
What really impresses about the BYD M6 is its exhaustive list of driving assistance and safety features. It’s apparent that the brand takes the safety of its drivers and passengers seriously. Almost any feature you can think of is provided. Electric parking brake system, electronic stability control, traction control system, vehicle dynamic control system, coordinate d regenerative braking system, and roll movement intervention are just a few that helps with an efficient and comfortable drive. Safety features include autonomous emergency braking, predictive collision warning, rear collision warning, blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert and brake, and lane departure assist should help most drivers get from one place to the next in one piece.

VOLKSWAGEN ID.BUZZ PRO LWB
Is it a van? Is it an MPV? Or is this just the coolest, people-centric vehicle on the road today? Well, maybe all of the above.
Whatever it is, the VW ID.Buzz turns heads anywhere it goes. One would even venture as far to say that its futuristic and immensely likable design could be VW’s saving grace after decades of conservative attempts seen in its Golf and SUV ranges. And to add to that, the car-van also has a nostalgic air about it that many who remember the VW Camper will inevitably look back with fondness.
But the ID.Buzz is not your grandfather’s minivan, not by a long shot. In the first place, it doesn’t take gas. The EV MPV comes in two variants with the normal wheelbase model (NWB, 5-seater) using a 84/79 kWh (gross/net) battery that is stated to take you over 460km before needing a charge. The longer wheelbase model (LWB, 6 to 7-seater) has a battery capacity of 91/86 kWh, and a combined WLTP range of 487km. With a DC charger and a maximum charging speed of up to 200 kW, it takes just 26 minutes to go from 10% to 80% charge.
There is more behind the battery story with the VW ID.Buzz. VW’s Modular Electric Drive kit, designed specifically for EVs, allows the wheelbase to be larger, with shorter overhangs, and the small electric motors sit directly on the axles. This means VW EVs allow more space, range, comfort and convenience.
The fast-charging battery systems are protected and integrated into the floor of the vehicle to save space, lower the centre of gravity, and optimize weight distribution for well balanced and dynamic driving.
There are also subtle, but useful, aspects of the car that are not immediately noticeable to the eye. With IQ.Light technology, illumination from the headlights is cast as far and wide as possible, and automatically masks off areas to avoid blinding oncoming cars. Headlight beams can swivel as you take corners for better visibility, while automatically levelling headlights allow precision even as your load changes.
Keeping passengers comfortable is one of the requirements of any MPV. But the ID.Buzz goes one further and makes it fun for them too. While the three-zone Air Care Climatronic air-conditioning system keeps everyone cool, the 12.9-inch display maintains the centrepiece of the infotainment feature.
AppConnect provides you with effortless connectivity to your smart device and mirroring across the on-board infotainment screens. And on select models, voice-controlled systems make your journeys that little bit easier, combined with artificial intelligence for extra versatility and functionality. The large electro-chromatic panoramic sunroof lets everyone enjoy the great outdoors, and can be darkened when things get a little too bright, and hot. The car is also equipped with an “Easy Open” virtual pedal where the rear boot and doors can be opened with a kicking motion under the rear bumper or side of the vehicle.
You can expect many of VW’s driving assistance and safety features in the ID.Buzz. These include adaptive cruise control, travel assist that adjusts speed according to road conditions using predictive cruise control and cornering assist, lane assist, and exit warning system. The top-down visual perspective of the aerial view is useful when negotiating tight spaces or parking, and traffic jam assist manages your distance and speed in stop-and-go traffic. Enhanced safety features include the Proactive Passenger Protective System where the car automatically winds down the windows and tightens seat belts in the event of an impending accident; as well as warning sleepy drivers through the Advanced Driver Attention and Drowsiness Monitor.
The VW ID.Buzz goes another step further with its environmental awareness. Interiors use recycled materials like Seaqual yarn on the seat covers, which are made from 10% collected marine debris and 90% recycled polyester yarn.

ZEEKR 009 DELUXE
To say that the Zeekr 009 Deluxe is arguably one of the most luxurious EV MPVs around is not venturing into hyperbole by any measure. Arriving in style wouldn’t be hard to imagine, and passengers won’t be rushing out of the car given how comfortable and well-appointed the interiors are. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves here.
Like its SUVs, Zeekr’s MPV has a futuristic design that is both bold and refined. The sleek silhouette of the 009 is sophisticated, yet aerodynamic, reducing drag for better energy efficiency and high-speed stability.
The front of the vehicle is equipped with intelligent matrix LED headlamps featuring
Adaptive Driving Beam (ADB) technology, which automatically adjusts in real-time to
provide optimal lighting in all driving conditions. The design is further enhanced by a fluid rear lamp that spans the entire width of the MPV, creating a visually striking signature that flows seamlessly with the vehicle’s dynamic lines, both in the day and at night.
Getting in and out of the car is a breeze given the large entrance dimensions, and the electric sliding rear doors. Acoustic side windows keep unwanted sound out while the panoramic sunroof lets the outdoors in.
Like its Zeekr brethren, the drive of the 009 Deluxe is most impressive. Punchy and powerful, the 009 Deluxe offers a WLTP range of up to 604km. The MPV’s 150kW DC fast-charging capability allows the battery to replenish from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes.
Zeekr has paid attention to nearly every detail in the interior. High-quality Nappa leather, fine stitching, and premium materials across the dashboard add both texture and durability. The 009 Deluxe also offers flexible seating configurations with its seven-seat layout.
Both the first and second rows are equipped with massage, ventilation, and power adjustment capabilities, ensuring exceptional comfort throughout. The second row boasts Sofaro first-class aeronautical seats, adjustable leg rests and headrests, as well as folding table plate for added convenience. The vehicle also doesn’t skimp on storage space with the 574-litre boot expandable to an impressive 2979 litres with the rear seats down.
The Zeekr 009 Deluxe doesn’t shy away from offering the highest level of technology under its hood. Dual Qualcomm 8295 Snapdragon computer chips power the intelligent cockpit for both driver and passengers. The 30-speaker Yamaha surround sound system is one of the best among all cars we’ve tested, and the 17-inch OLED roof-mounted touch-screen display is welcomingly indulgent. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are offered, and the car also supports over-the-air updates to ensure that the vehicle’s software is up to date.
The car’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) provides automated parking assist, blind-spot detection, lane departure warning, and auto lane change, enhancing safety and confidence on every drive. With one-pedal driving, multiple driving modes, including comfort, eco, sport, snow, and individual, and an array of intelligent scene modes in its intelligent cockpit & mobility ecology system, the Zeekr 009 Deluxe is highly adaptable to both driver preferences and road conditions.

Multi-faceted MPVs Ideal for Singapore Roads
Multi-purpose vehicles are here to stay – just look at the proliferation of them on the roads. Singapore is a perfect home for these people carriers, and electric versions of these popular cars make a lot of sense. The sophistication and quality of later models, particularly those from Chinese brands, take the genre leaps and bounds beyond what came before. And while many ICE versions of years past were often driven by hired chauffeurs, the three featured here are so fun to drive that it will be difficult to keep the owners from the driver seats.
