What is ‘Friendly Streets’?
Friendly Streets is an initiative by Land Transport Authority (LTA) that builds on existing efforts such as Silver Zones, School Zones and road repurposing, ‘Friendly Streets’ aims make daily walking journeys to key amenities in neighbourhoods safer, more convenient and comfortable.
Features in each Friendly Street are tailored to meet different needs of the area to create more inclusive and gracious communities. Pedestrian-friendly features that may be implemented include:
- Roads with reduced speed limits
- More barrier-free pedestrian crossings with pedestrian priority
- Road markings and treatments to calm vehicular traffic and encourage gracious road behaviour
- Wider and more accessible footpaths where possible
To further protect pedestrians, traffic offences that endanger others within Friendly Streets will incur
- Two additional demerit points on top of the prevailing demerit points for the offence.
- Composition fines will be raised by $100.
These enhanced penalties match that of offences committed at Silver Zones and School Zones. This change will take effect from 1 January 2026 to provide time for motorists to adjust

“I am pleased to update that we have completed our engagements with the communities in these areas and finalised the schemes for these locations,” said then Senior Minister of State for Transport, Dr Amy Khor, on 14 January 2025. “We will be commencing infrastructure works progressively from the first half of this year, and these are expected to complete by 2026.”
Pilot projects completed
‘Friendly Streets’ was first announced in 2023, with five towns — Ang Mo Kio, Bukit Batok West, Tampines, Toa Payoh, and West Coast — designated as pilot projects. There were completed in March 2025. “We have received positive feedback from residents,” reported Dr Khor. “For example, residents living at Ang Mo Kio Street 31 have shared with us that the Friendly Streets features, like the new raised zebra crossing, make their commutes much safer. They also appreciate the improved barrier-free connectivity.” According to LTA, “Response from residents have been positive, with nine in ten agreeing that their walking and cycling experiences have improved.”
Dr Khor emphasised that the rate of progress was only possible by partnering community representatives. “We walked the ground at each site to observe the behaviour of commuters using each street, and identified areas of improvements specific to the user behaviour in the area,” she shared. Besides appointing a taskforce — comprising the Adviser and community representatives, such as the Merchants Associations, the residents network, or school representatives — to engage the community, local residents were also surveyed to hear first-hand their commuting experience and needs.
Looking ahead
Dr Khor revealed that the ‘Friendly Streets’ initiative will be expanded to all towns in Singapore by 2030. They will be located at high-activity areas near key amenities. “This will serve all residents in the neighbourhood, including private residential estates,” said Dr Khor. “For example, among the 10 upcoming Friendly Streets, Pek Kio and Havelock are also located near private residential areas, and their new features can be enjoyed by all pedestrians and cyclists visiting nearby amenities.”
In addition, 15 more locations have been identified and engagement will commence in 2025. These locations – Boon Lay, Bukit Timah, Fengshan, Geylang, Jurong West, Opera Estate, Pasir Ris, Queenstown, Simei, Tanjong Pagar, Telok Blangah, Thomson, Woodlands, Yew Tee and Yishun – have a higher proportion of seniors or young families who will directly benefit from the initiative.
