Crossover cars are jack of all trades in the auto world. Here are three you can consider that won’t break the bank.
In a compact, urban city state like Singapore, we ask a lot of our cars. We need them to be comfortable, carry gear, and affordable. These are just some reasons why crossovers have become so popular in recent times. The cars featured below not only tick many of the boxes on drivers’ requirement lists, they also look very good.
HONDA JAZZ CROSSTAR E:HEV
The Honda Jazz has been a quality compact offering in Singapore for many years. It got an upgrade earlier in the year, and now comes with a crossover variant called the Jazz Crosstar e:HEV. This variant promises to be “suited for adventure seekers on road trips or simply basking in the sun”. So, you can expect that it will have all the nifty elements of a fun ride.
Honda kicks this proposition off by offering bold and stunning colours for the Jazz Crosstar e:HEV, Fjord Mist Blue being one of them. There are also three dual tones – Crystal Black with Premium Opal White Silver (pearl), Crystal Black with Rose Gold (metallic) and Crystal Black with Premium Crystal Red (metallic).
The new Jazz Crosstar features a distinctive grille with a honeycomb design, and roof rails, complimented with chrome inserts and matching side skirt. The car is also available in Honda’s new Fjord Mist Blue colour scheme.
The Honda Jazz is into its fourth generation, and now offers the e:HEV powertrain which comprises two electric motors, a 1.5L i-VTEC petrol engine, a lithium-ion battery, innovative fixed-gear transmission along with three intelligent driving modes to deliver real-world efficiency. The new Jazz sees revision to the e:HEV system where efficiency, driveability and output are increased. The electric motor has a 13hp increase which results in a higher total output of 130hp.
Those who know Honda understand that cars from the brand offer more space than it looks on the outside. It’s part of the “man maximum, machine minimum” philosophy that helps the company retain its class-leading interior space across generations. The new Jazz continues this legacy, aided by positioning the fuel tank in the centre of the chassis beneath the front seats, allowing the ULTRA seats to “fold flat” or “flip up” for flexibility.
Naturally, there is more to the car than pure space and a renewed punch in the drive. Honda Sensing suite of safety technologies come standard, including Collision Mitigation Braking System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist System, Road Departure Mitigation and Auto High Beam.
The Honda Jazz Crosstar e:HEV is still built in Japan and comes with an exclusive five-year unlimited mileage warranty and a five-year battery warranty offered by Kah Motor (terms and conditions apply).

SKODA KAMIQ
SKODAs are possibly some of the most underrated, and under-considered cars in Singapore when it comes to solid engineering and value-for-money features and quality. Their sensibility in design further bridges the gap between modernity and tradition.
The growing number of models from the Czech Republic brand includes the Kamiq, a crossover SUV that is both handsome to look at, and practical to drive. It may look like an enlarged VW Golf (Volkswagen owns SKODA, by the way), but on closer look, its silhouette has a more muscular heft that translates to larger space inside.
The latest version of the Kamiq has a wider grille, sharper headlights and a more distinctive front bumper. New LED headlights enhance visibility as well. The redesigned rear also has a revamped bumper, while the rear reflectors and taillights create a characteristic C-shape that is quite striking.
Luggage space is undeniable as the 400 litres (rear seats up) is well thought out and manageable given the clever details for configuration. With the passenger seats down, storage is bumped up to 1395 litres. The Kamiq also has a neat compartment in the driver’s door for your umbrella, and mobile phone slots at the back of the front seats.
The model available in Singapore is the 1.0TSI 85kW, which has a turbo-charged petrol engine that can generate 113hp. The front-wheel drive powertrain also offers a seven-speed DSG transmission ensuring smooth transitions through the gears at speed.
There is a touch of luxury inside with the LED light strip below the dashboard providing an illuminated trim in a choice of two colours. The interior’s dominant feature is the new eight-inch digital display and the new infotainment display in the middle of the dashboard. The SmartLink feature works with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, letting you connect effortlessly from the dashboard. Two 45W fast-charging USB-C ports at the front and back helps you keep your devices juiced up as you travel.
The safety systems in the SKODA Kamiq include Front Assist that uses the radar in the front grille to monitor the distance to the vehicle ahead and automatically brakes to avoid collisions, and Side Assist with Rear Traffic Alert where an alert is generated with vehicles approaching from behind or the blind spot are detected. The fatigue and drowsiness monitor rounds out a highly viable package that leaves little to be desired by the cost-conscious, features-demanding driver in Singapore.

TOYOTA COROLLA CROSS
When you combine hybrid performance from Toyota with the enlarged and stylized body of a Corolla, what you get is a car that hits all the right notes on the roads of Singapore.
Enter the Toyota Corolla Cross.
The full hybrid packs a punch with its 2.0-litre Dynamic Force engine, mated to Toyota’s fifth generation hybrid system to deliver a considerable 195hp. The self-charging full hybrid system means you never need to be worried about charging the battery. Road handling forte is taken care of by the rear double wishbone suspension, while the small turning radius makes negotiating narrow roads and tight car parks a breeze.
The Corolla Cross possesses a bold stance that is made ever more distinctive by the wide centre grille with a unique gradating pattern. LED headlamps integrated nicely with the daytime running lights in a design that you can spot a mile away. And the 18-inch rims give the car a sporty gravitas that adds to its aesthetics.
A touch of class is immediately evident once you step into the cockpit. The leather-fabric combination in the upholstery offers the best of two worlds. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is available via the eight-inch multimedia system, and wireless smartphone charging is also available. In the rear, air-conditioning vents and USB-C charging pots up the ante for passenger care.
LED front door illumination is a touch of ambient sophistication, and the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is typically sensibly oriented and customizable. Some of the refinements are naked to the eye as the dual-zone automatic air-conditioning system has a pollen filter to make sure that everyone inside enjoys clean, fresh air.

The Toyota Corolla Cross comes with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, which includes Pre-Collision System, Road Sign Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (all speed), Lane Tracing Assist, and Lane Departure Alert. The Blind Spot Monitor ups the safety quotient by alerting you to vehicles in the blind spot when you make lane changes, and the Parking Support Brake automatically engages the brakes when it senses vehicles or obstacles in your way while you’re reversing or moving slowly. And to top it all off, the 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor allows you to see all around you to make sure that from start to stop, your journey is as safe as can be.
