Singapore’s road markings are using thermoplastics paints which is used widely internationally. It is expected that when it is wet, there is a slight drop in skid resistance. This is typical for all types of materials / surfaces. However, the retro-reflectivity of these thermoplastic paints are still functional even with the slight drop in the skid resistance. It is worth to note that road markings are still safe as long as motorists do not travel beyond the safe speed limit during raining days.
AA’s tips on wet days:
- Drivers are reminded to always prepare well before setting off.
- Check the weather forecast and plan your route. Consider delays and choose safer roads.
- As wet roads will result in reduced traction, Slow Down and ease up on the accelerator and keep a safe following distance.
- As a rule of thumb, reduce your speed by about 1/3 on a wet road.
- Take turns slowly. Just like with driving, you should reduce the speed of your turns by about a third when it’s raining.
- Avoid hard braking to avoid skidding.
- Watch up for standing water.
- Tyre tread is what allows your tyres to adhere to the road. Without the right traction, you can skid, slide, and hydroplane easily in wet conditions.
- Turn your lights on. The headlights will make it easier for other drivers to see your car and will help you see the road better too.
- Stay updated and tune in to radio on traffic reports for real-time updates.
