Smart ‘n’ Sporty

2 min read
Suzuki’s ability to launch new Category A cars has been as dependable as their value proposition of building quality cars that don’t cost an arm and a leg. The all-new Suzuki S-Cross forges a new frontier for the brand as it combines their two strengths – compact four-door and affordable SUVs – into one attractive package.

Suzuki may call it an S-Cross, but the car is really a compact SUV that has all the bells and whistles of a utility vehicle, albeit with a relatively small footprint. This is a smart-looking car, if you veer towards the conservative in styling. The grille does go some way in helping the S-Cross stand out in traffic, and the bold S evokes imagery of a certain DC Comic superhero.

Both front and rear lamps feature three LED position lamps, with the headlamps offering daytime running lights. Big, bold rims provide some gravitas, and the silver garnishes around the front and rear bumper offer a little flash.

The Suzuki S-Cross is marketed as a vehicle that is ready for anything, anywhere, anytime. The 1.5l direct-injection BOOSTERJET Turbo engine provides ample power and torque that has come to be expected from Suzuki’s performance prowess. And the Smart Hybrid that regenerates energy from deceleration helps with fuel consumption.

There is a touch of sportiness in the S-Cross, and the wide gear ratios of the six-speed transmission offers commendable acceleration. Paddle shifters allow drivers to fine-tune their ride, and they can even switch to manual without taking their hands off the wheel.

Decent performance stats aside, the Suzuki S-Cross is all about utility, and it doesn’t disappoint. The 440L capacity luggage space can be configured in a 60:40 split with the rear seats that recline, and rear passengers have ample leg room to stretch out.

Four cameras (front, rear, and both sides) provide 360-degree view in the S-Cross, and the simulated birds-eye view of the car and its surrounding helps with manoeuvring in and out of tight spots. Lane Departure Warning and Weaving Alert lets you know if you’re straying away from your lane, and Adaptive Cruise Control lets you maintain speed and distance from vehicles in front when on the highway.

Manufacturers may be focusing on the next generation of electrified vehicles, but there looks to still be a place for hybridised petrol automobiles that offer good value for money. The Suzuki S-Cross just may be an ideal option in the final generation of the latter.
