COVID-19 Car Essentials

2 min read
Must-have items to have in your car to stave off the coronavirus.

While the COVID-19 pandemic will stay with us for some time to come, the easing of Circuit Breaker rules means motorists can now use their cars for non-essential travel. However, additional precautions must still be taken in order to stay safe.

One way to do this is by ensuring that your vehicle has all the items you need to maintain good hygiene. We recommend that you store the following items in your vehicle.Hand Sanitiser
While most of us stock some hand sanitisers at home, you should make it a point to store a bottle or two in your car as well. For it to be effective, you should use it as often as possible, preferably every 20 minutes. Alcohol is a major component of most hand sanitisers. In fact, the World Health Organization recommends products that have an alcohol content of 70% and above. However, sanitisers with such high concentrations of alcohol are susceptible to catching fire when exposed to sunlight. As such, do store your bottles away from sunlight. Also, ensure it is sealed properly so that it does not leak onto the car’s surface.Car Disinfectant
For added precaution against the coronavirus, keep a bottle of disinfectant on hand to sanitise your car. As you can never be too careful, start with sanitising the door handles before you even get in. Once you are inside the car, make sure you sanitise areas that are often touched, such as the steering wheel, gear lever, handbrake and dashboard.

Alcohol Prep Pads
Handy alcohol prep pads are ideal for disinfecting handphones, car keys, and water bottles. You could also use them to disinfect your onboard touchscreen entertainment system.

Disposable Nitrile Gloves
Even with all the precautions you take, surfaces both inside and outside your car can be less than pristine, so have a pair of gloves in the car and wear them as often as possible. Make sure you dispose of them safely after each trip.

Air Purifier
Maintain a germ-free environment inside your car with a car air purifier. Besides protecting you from germs and bacteria at this time, it is an investment that will stand you in good stead beyond this pandemic.

Do check out the air purifier that is available in the AAShop. AA Members are entitled to a special price on the iRoad iAir Pro Smart Air Purifier.

Silicone Cup Holder Liners
You may not realise this, but the cup holders in your car can be a breeding ground for germs. To circumvent this problem, try lining them with silicone cup holder liners, otherwise known as cupcake liners.

Face Mask
Of course, don’t forget your face mask. Place a couple of them in a tightly sealed ziplock bag in the glove compartment of your car in case you forget to wear one when leaving your house.
