Get Fit, The Tiktok Way

3 min read

From influencers sharing advice to workout challenges, TikTok can be an excellent way to start your fitness journey

Online fitness may have had its inception during the Covid lockdown but it is here to stay. Many are turning to online platforms like TikTok to get their fitness fix.

Fitness videos on TikTok are posted by a mix of personal trainers, gym buffs and weekend warriors. They are usually short – some lasting for no more than 15 seconds. This makes them accessible. On top of that, the novelty of the exercises posted piques the curiosity of viewers and motivates even couch potatoes to get moving.

The following are a few fitness videos that have attracted quite a following on TikTok in recent times:

Cosy Cardio
If a cardio workout is something that stresses you out, you’ll like this one. Started by US wellness influencer Hope Zuckerbrow, it involves lighting a scented candle, making an iced protein coffee (or any tasty drink), and playing around with sunset and lava lamps for mood lighting. The stage is now set for your cosy cardio workout.

Regularly up before dawn because her boyfriend is a restaurant server, Zuckerbrow came up with the idea one morning because she couldn’t fall back to sleep. Dressed in her pyjamas and with the TV on, she decided to clock in her steps for the day. Experts say the low-impact workout video helps remind us that workouts should be enjoyable and is suitable for beginners and recovery days.

12-3-30 Workout
Created by health and beauty social media influencer Lauren Giraldo, this treadmill workout has gained in popularity since it first debuted in 2019. It goes like this:

  • Adjust your treadmill’s incline to 12%
  • Set your speed to 3 miles per hour
  • Walk for 30 minutes

Walking is an effective low-impact exercise which is good for people with joint issues. Walking briskly at a steep incline – like you do in this workout – will engage the muscles in your glutes, hamstrings and legs more than if you were doing so on level ground.

My thoughts on 12-3-30 •• this means youre walking at an incline of 12, speed of 3, for 30 minutes. You can always try lowering the incline a bit, the speed, make it your own. Every body is capable of different things. Something that might work for someone else might not work for you, and thats okay♥️ #12330 #cardio #12330treadmill

Treadmill Strut Workouts
The treadmill strut workouts are spearheaded by TikTok user Allie Bennett. Consisting of a playlist of songs centred around a specific artist, genre or mood, the workouts require you to increase the speed on the treadmill by 0.1mph every time the song changes. Do listen to the playlist in order as the songs are arranged so that the tempo increases with your speed. So you are well advised to work your way through them in the order of Bennett’s playlist.

Primal Movements Workout
Fitness trendsetters are adding primal movements into their workouts, from crocodile crawls to sideways ape. The regimen has been around for some time but received renewed attention in recent years. The moves target muscles that are usually neglected, helping to enhance body awareness and agility.

Fitness is constantly evolving. While it is important to stay informed about these new trends, it’s best to do your own research and consult your doctor before you start a new exercise programme.
