Essential Items For Your First-Aid Kit

2 min read
Keeping a well-stocked first-aid kit in your home and car will ensure that you are prepared in case of an emergency. Below is a list of items you should have in yours.

Accidents can happen either in the home or while you are travelling in your car. Having a first-aid kit on hand is useful for handling small cuts, bumps, bruises, bites, stings and other small injuries.

PLAN WHAT YOU NEED
Before putting together your first-aid kit, make a list of the possible risks and hazards that could occur for you, your spouse and anyone else who lives with you.

Aside from common injuries, you should also be prepared for medical conditions family members suffer from that may lead to a life-threatening situation. For example, if one of you is asthmatic, your first-aid kit should include an inhaler, Epi-pen or other allergy medications that they may need.

KEEP IT ORGANISED
Your first-aid kit should be organised in such a way that anyone who opens it can easily find what they need. This is especially important as a person who requires a first-aid kit is likely to be in the middle of an issue, and — depending on the severity of the situation — may be in a state of panic. Choose a bag or pouch with separate compartments so you can store related items together such as plasters, bandages and dressings. Label the items clearly.

When it comes to your car, store your first-aid kit in an area that stays relatively cool since heat and sunlight can degrade certain products, such as medicated creams and ointments.

WHEN TO SEEK HELP
First-aid kits are meant to help manage an injury or other medical issue that doesn’t require urgent treatment. When you are faced with a serious problem, such as a wound that won’t stop bleeding or a blow to the head, you should visit the emergency department of your nearest hospital.

OTHER ESSENTIAL ITEMS
A first-aid kit is not the only essential you ought to have in your car. There are numerous other items that can get you out of other sticky situations. Check out AA Singapore’s TikTok video to find out what else you should have on hand at:
