You should drink whisky with ice. You should drink whisky without ice. You should add water, but not too much. Soda is fine but cola is not, and you shouldn’t drink alone though just one solitary dram to wind down after a long day is okay. There seems to be so many rules surrounding enjoying your favourite whisky – so what exactly is the right way?
Put simply – there is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to enjoy whisky. We think that there are many ways to enjoy whiskies. You may enjoy gathering with friends to enjoy some whisky-based cocktails. You may enjoy pairing your whiskies with your meal. Or you may enjoy reaching into the back of the cupboard for your most cherished whisky which you share with only the most important people in your life. We believe there is a way to enjoy whisky for every occasion. Since we’re often in need of some refreshment in Singapore, highballs are our go-to!
Like adding water to whisky, adding soda helps to release the different flavour notes in whiskies. For high quality spirits such as whisky, it’s a pity to mask the flavour with drinks like cola, therefore we recommend adding soda as this will accentuate the flavours, and not mask them.
The base recipe for a Chivas Highball is 1 part of Chivas to 3 parts of Soda – but we didn’t take up these pages to give you just one recipe. We’re here with 6 of our favourite highballs that we’ve split into 3 categories.
MINIMUM EFFORT, MAXIMUM REWARD are highballs guaranteed to impress with, you guessed it, minimal effort. If you’re FEELING FRUITY, it is recommended to purchase a couple of store-bought cordials to take your highballs to the next level. Finally, the LOCAL LEGENDS put a local twist on the highball, and you can prepare your sugar syrups in advance.

ROAD SAFETY ADVICE FROM AA SINGAPORE
Enjoy your whisky drinking responsibly. If you know that you’re going to be having a tipple or two, forgo your vehicle and hail a taxi or use taxi/private car hire apps before and after the session. Never mix drinking with driving — this will not only keep you and other road uses free from harm, but also save you a pretty penny.
If you are convicted of drink-driving, you are liable for a fine of between $2,000 and $10,000 and/or up to one year’s jail for a first-time offence. Repeat offenders can expect to be fined between $5,000 and $20,000 and up to two years’ jail.
